Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang

Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata)

Essential oils have countless benefits for both humans and dogs alike. While many smell pleasantly nice, they often possess healing benefits which is why we at Natural Dog Company include them in our healing dog balms and salves. PawTection, in particular, includes ylang ylang, an important ingredient that helps heal and protect skin from infections from cuts, wounds or burns.

Ylang Ylang, also known as Cananga odorata, is a flowering herb often found in the rainforests of Asian and South Pacific Islands like the Philippines, Indonesia, Polynesia, Sumatra and Comoro. Ylang ylang is an essential oil, which means it won’t break down or dissolve in water as other fragrant oils can. It has an extremely pleasant aroma and can help to kill bacteria, making it a beneficial ingredient in many ointments and salves that are intended to protect dogs’ paws.

It is derived from the cananga tree, mainly found throughout certain parts of Indonesia. It originated in the Philippines but was cultivated in other regions of this part of the world because of its extremely pleasant aroma. It is commonly used in certain perfumes, and can also be used as a room freshener. For humans, it can be mixed with carrier oils and applied topically to improve circulation and the appearance of blemishes, and is even known to boost hair growth and strength. It’s an antiseborrheic and an antiseptic, and is used in Natural Dog Company’s PawTection balm.

Why Use Ylang Ylang for Dogs

One of the most important things for those looking to treat dry dog paws is making sure a product is safe for their beloved pet. That’s why natural ingredients are so important to consider and check for when choosing new products for your pets. Ylang Ylang is definitely one of those natural ingredients that can lend benefits to our furry friends, too, especially when it comes to protecting and healing dry, cracked dog paws.

Ylang Ylang essential oil is renowned as a natural regulator of sebum, or skin oil. When a dog’s paws become dried out because they don’t obtain or produce enough oil, the skin can become cracked, causing your dog pain. There are many conditions that can reduce the amount of oil and moisture a dog’s paws have, including the surfaces upon which they walk.

Dogs’ paws are designed to withstand both hot and cold temperature extremes, and also act as a cushion for their feet, much like a person’s shoes should do. However, when dogs are walking on hot surfaces, or even rough surfaces, such as pavement and concrete, it can wear their paw pads down and cause them to dry out. The elements that dogs’ paws come in contact with can also contribute to dryness and irritation. Elements like pollen, allergens, sidewalk salts, fertilizer and pesticides can all cause your dogs’ paws discomfort.

Adding protective healing solutions to their paws can help to alleviate pain and, when they contain Ylang Ylang as one of the main ingredients, can also restore some of those natural oils and moisture.

Essential Properties of Ylang Ylang

There are various grades of Ylang Ylang oil, but they contain a variety of all natural chemicals that provide benefits for dogs with sensitive or dry and chapped paws. Some of those are:

  • Linalool
  • Germacreme
  • Geranyl acetate
  • Caryophylene
  • p-cresyl methyl ether
  • Methyl benzoate
  • Sesquiterpenes

Ylang ylang can also act as an antiseptic to some degree, which may be necessary depending on the severity of the cracked and dried paws. Studies have shown that ylang ylang can help cuts, wounds and abrasions avoid infection by inhibiting microbial growth and disinfecting the area. The ylang ylang in our PawTection protects the wounds and actually helps speed up the healing process.

Because of its aroma, it is pleasing to both dogs and humans, though when added to an ointment or cream as a way to help protect paws, it becomes even more subtle, with just a touch of fragrance to it.

For those looking to alleviate dry dog paws and reduce pain, relying on all natural ingredients is the best way to go and ylang ylang is a great ingredient to bolster the ability of any cream or ointment to retain and regulate sebum.
