Bulldog Tail Infections: How To Treat & Prevent

Help! My bulldog’s tail pocket is infected!

Bulldog tail infections are classified by itchy, red or stinky skin, as well as any other signs of irritation. Bulldogs have adorable little screw tails covered in wrinkles. As cute as their wrinkly tails may be, these creases and folds open up their little backdoors to a number of potential infections. If your dog’s tail blocks his or her anus in any way the infection can be made worse by anal sac fluids and feces—which can create a terrible (and thankfully curable) stench. Some dogs develop a yeast infection in their tail pocket, which then causes them to lick and chew at their behinds with no shame. Yeast infections tend to come with a pretty icky stench as well.

How To Treat Bulldog Tail Infections

screwtail_webIf your bulldog’s tail infection is bad enough to warrant serious concern, you may want to bring your dog to the vet, as he or she might need an antibiotic.

Clip the fur surrounding the infected area. Fur is a breeding ground for infectious materials. Your best bet is to get rid of it so that it doesn’t increase the risk for further infection. This will also make it easier to treat the infection.

Wash the area with an antiseptic soap and blot dry.

If the wound is already open use a clean napkin or gauze to gently press out any pus, which will be absorbed by the gauze. This should only be done if the wound is already open and draining pus.

Soak a washcloth in warm water and apply it over the area. Warmth draws out blood antibodies and white blood cells that help fight off infection. Apply the hot washcloth to your dog’s skin for 5 minutes on and 5 minutes off until the cloth cools. Repeat this process 2-5 times a day until you notice it healing. This can also help soften and remove scabs as they form, helping to reduce the risk of abscess formation.dsr_353_wb_web

How To Prevent Future Bulldog Tail Infections

Wrinkles provide a dark and moist space where bacteria, yeast and other infections thrive. Daily cleaning is key to preventing infections. Always make sure the area is completely dry when you are finished cleaning.

Wrinkle Balm is an effective treatment method as well as preventative measure. You’ll want to continue applying Wrinkle Balm even after the area improves. Daily cleaning followed by application of Wrinkle Balm will help prevent future infections from forming. Giving your bulldog the greatest chance at a healthy and happy life full of endless tail wags.
